My eyes
Very sad country style song. I was speaking to a woman at a bar who had given her daughter up for adoption. She knew that she was adopted and actually took to liking her biological mother. The woman said it kills her to not have her daughter with her but was very proud of the woman she was becoming.

I was so young and foolish
when you stormed into my life
I told myself that I can do this
but that was just my foolish pride
I gave you all that I had
I just couldn’t give you enough
and baby I promise you that
I gave you up out of love
Well they have your memories
your first day of school and they’ll have your last
and they get your good times
they get to cheer you up when you are sad
they got your first steps, they got to hold you close each time you’d cry
and they get to keep you in their lives
but you have my eyes
I watched you grow from afar
and they didn’t seem to care for that
and oh how you stole my heart
every other time I heard your laugh
I keep your baby picture close
it seems sometimes that’s all I have left
at least your life is on path
and mine without you is such a mess
Now they have your memories
your first day of school and they’ll have your last
and they get your good times
they get to cheer you up when you are sad
they got your first steps, they got to hold you close each time you’d cry
and they get to keep you in their lives
but you have my eyes
Now you’re all grown up and you’re a dream
and somehow now you found truth
I know they’re still your family
and I love the way they raised you
I’ll never have what they had
and that’s okay by me
but sometimes it makes me so damn mad
and then some times I stop and think
I’m glad they have your memories
I’m they’re a good mom and good dad
and my heart’s filled with envy
that they can cheer you up each time your sad
I wish I was there for your first steps, I wish I could hold you when you cry
I wish I got to keep you in my life
at least you have my eyes
