Days like these are islands in our northern ocean lives,
Days that re-provision us and help us to survive,
Days that are oases in the barren desert lands,
Days like these sustain us as we tramp across the sands,
Days like these may pass but they are never truly gone,
Days like these they help us carry on, soldier on,
Days like these they help us carry on,
It’s what days that haul us shoreward do,
Days we can look forward to,
Days like these they help us carry on
The day a love surrenders, the day a love invades,
A day of overdue but unexpected accolades,
Days when distant children unexpectedly appear,
Days when all your family are gathered safe and near,
Days when ugly ducklings spiral back to you as swans,
Days like this they help us carry on, soldier on,
Days like this they help us carry on,
Every one a coup d’etat
That sets a crown on who we are
Days like these they help us carry on.
Christmas Eve and Christmas morning, all the world is glad,
The beauty of the everyday when bad news isn’t bad,
Evenings in the public bar when everybody flies,
And everybody's rhetoric is wonderfully wise,
And soars up to the rafters and continues thereupon,
Days like this they help us carry on, soldier on,
Days like this they help us carry on.
Every day a pause for breath
To each its happy shibboleth,
Days like these they help us carry on.
Days like these redeem us, and wipe away the sin
Of bitterness and melancholy worn beneath the skin,
Days like this persuade us that there isn’t any shame
In knowing that our gravestones will bear nothing but our name,
For any fool can find his Avalon,
Days like these they help us carry on, soldier on,
Days like these they help us carry on.
Days that show the world will turn
Though all our self-deceptions burn,
Days like these they help us carry on Carry on, soldier on,
Days like these they help us carry on,
Always the approaching night
But always we can nurse the light
Of days like these that help us carry on.
