Mongoose and the Cobra
This is a talking-blues song. This is a very specific genre, so I understand if it's not everyone's cup of tea. Me, I love the talking-blues genre and have written quite a few. I really like this one. It's a legitimate story that has a strong moral and everything, while also being a little on the humorous side.

"Son, go to sleep" my daddy said
Usually weren't him to put me to bed
Typically days that end with "Y" he'd just keep drinkin'
"I got a story to tell ya" he belted out
And I got real curious what it's about
Least as best I could do with a small boy's thinkin'
"This one here, granddaddy told when I was three
Told to him by his, who had learned it from me"
Didn't make a lick of sense, but you never question pa
"It's about lost love and some property rights
Lessons to not take away, if you're to sleep at night"
Boy, I just couldn't wait, he could tell by my yawn
"Once upon a time was an ol' mongoose
Tried to eat him a cobra, but got bad news
He ventured down into a den that sure wasn't his own
The cobra he bit was a fat slick lad
Had the best tasting skin that he'd ever had
But unbeknownst to him other cobras lived in this home
(Chorus/break)
Well, this wasn't soundin' all that okay
But I's just a kid, so, hey, what the hay
"The lady of the house was named Lucille
She saw her husband get bit, started to squeal
Fangs and slippery scales and she slid over real quick
The mongoose saw her coming from a mile away
He gnarled and growled and said 'Yeah, okay
Come get if you want it,' mean and he was throwing fits"
"But what that old mongoose had missed
Down in separate holes were some separate kids
And they all came at him like a shot and plum wrapped him up
He mighta took two, on his best day three
But before he could blink, there were all seventeen
Out for justice for their daddy, vengeance called for blood"
(Chorus/break)
Daddy described that old mongoose gore
In horrible ways I'd never heard before
"So, son, I'm a-tell ya what it's about
If it's another man's house, stay your ass out
You better count how many there is, if you're not invited"
And to this day I think of what he said
Still wonder aloud what the hell he meant
Probably was drunk as hell, at least what I decided
And I still don't get what he was tryin' to do
If he was rootin' for the cobra or the ol' mongoose
40 years old now, and truth is I don't really care a lick
Either way it goes, yeah, it gave me nightmares
So I tell my kids about the three little bears
But Goldilocks was a thief too, come to think of it
Oh, shit...
