We are all guilty of "idealizing" the past and often imaging things in our memories to be better than they were. This song reflects on the fact that nothing stays the same and that we would have to give up parts of who we are now, who we've become to step back in time to those imagined ideal times...
In today's world many of us have experienced on a personal level or through others the effects of addiction on an acquaintance or even a family member. Whether it's drugs, alcohol, gambling or any other type of addiction often the consequences can be the same not only for the addict but for those around them. "Do the Line" touches on a surface level the issues from the addicts perspective and how it can often result in a gradual loss of everything around them.
Often in our individual lives and in society we are presented with similar opportunities or situations that allow us the opportunity to make different choices and to change ourselves and the direction our lives take. This song explores how we can "complete" some of our own personal situations and how society could do the same. We are presented with these similar scenarios to give us the opportunity to make new and beneficial choices...we simply need the courage to do so.
