How do you say goodbye?

(Christopher Van Name)

Our son, Julian, passed away in February at age 31. A beautiful soul. How do you say goodbye to someone you love so much? To anyone who brought so much light into your life?

How do you put a life into words When you don’t understand the ending How do you bring a song to life When the melody has died How do you find a way to define A love that’s never ending How do you make all the tears you’ve cried Find a way to let him go How do you go on When so much if you is gone How do you hold on When your heart is broken And how can you let go When you’re not sure he’ll ever know How much you love him And why so much was left unspoken How do you live the rest of your life Without drowning in your sorrow How do you give tomorrow a chance To make you laugh again How do you hold him in your heart When both your arms are empty How do you ever dream again When you’re afraid to close your eyes And how can you be strong When you know it won’t be long ‘Till everything you’ve known Has changed forever And how will you live on When you look beyond today And realize that he’s gone And you feel lost forever How do you put a life into words When it’s story’s never ending How do you keep the music alive So everyone will know How do you tell your broken heart That it can’t keep on pretending How do you say goodbye When you know you won’t let go How do you say goodbye When you love him so

The Embrace

By Christopher Van Name

Inspired by Hank Willis Thomas’s bronze sculpture, “The Embrace”, which was installed on Boston Commons in Boston, Massachusetts, US last year. It depicts the four arms intertwined, symbolizing the hug that Dr. Martin Luther King and his wife, Coretta Scott King, shared after he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. I tried to imagine the emotions that Dr. King might have been feeling.

Hello, moon

Unbroken

By Christopher Van Name

I continue to be amazed and inspired by the courage and perseverance of the Ukrainian people. Fighting and dying, Street by street, yard by yard, on their homeland for the right to self-determination and the very freedom we take for granted. I shouldn’t be surprised. I married one! For my wife, Adela, and the gallant people of Ukraine and the late Richard D. Hanusey, EdD.

Rat race

By Howard Aronson

This lyric is about the craziness of living in the world today. No one has time for anybody anymore, everybody's just moving at such a fast Pace. Simple pleasures are no longer simple, everything is a fight, it's just an arduous task to get through a day. All the distractions, the traffic on the roads, and the angry people behind the wheel. There's so much distraction, so much temptation, and so much aggravation. It's really hard to take, and it won't be long before the world just blows up totally. There's so many wars and so much hate I'm not sure how much longer this can last.

Making it

By Edward McBride

This song describes the hopes and dreams of a poor cotton picker in the Southern United States. He picks cotton by day and picks on his guitar at night. He stays humble as he starts to get noticed and gets signed up by an agent. The rise is rapid as he soon opens for some big stars in Nashville. Through it all he remains humble.

Attention Seeker

By Thelma Oragbon

The act of attention seeking is fervently looked down upon. But in these rap lyrics, the protagonist spins the term "attention seeker" in a positive way, owning and embracing the phrase to portray their confidence and irresistibility.
