Bittersweet Maria
No big story behind this one. I'm not even sure I know any Marias. Yet from Townes Van Zandt and David Allan Coe to rock and roll bands like Counting Crows, everyone has their obligatory "Maria" song, so now I do too.

Sweet Maria bears a smile from a darkened room
We speak carefully in the common tongue
Tells me of the fools, the gold she's lost
And what dreams now broken have become
(Chorus 1)
Bitter but still sweet Maria
Wilted and bruised but her petals strong
Never to bloom so she thinks it's over
Don't think she's the type to fall down in love
But I love; to spite her mood, I still love
Bitter but sweet Maria
She passes me over, pays me no heed
A life of her own, a frantic pace
If only she knew how tight I'd hold her
How every person I see becomes her face
(Chorus 2)
Bitter but still sweet Maria
Avoidance an art, her sweeping brush
Never felt for me once what I feel for her always
I want all of the things she doesn't want touched
And I'll touch; good lord above, would I touch
Bitter but sweet Maria
The passing of time will never feel for her
What I'd go through and do to slow its hands
The bent of her lips, the brown of her eyes
The tint of her skin, the velvet sand
(Chorus 3)
Bitter but still sweet Maria
She'd probably never like such a song
To hand her your heart chases her heart away
If you think that it's right, she'll just say that it's wrong
So I'm wrong; if it is, then it is, I'll be wrong, for
Bitter but sweet Maria
