The Oriole Who Was a Schoolyard Bully 'til His Wing Broke
A song I wrote based on the ongoing saga of the birds underneath my lilac bush. There's one big fat oriole under there who used to shriek and fight any other bird that would try to get to his patch of dirt. But there's always someone out there bigger and tougher.

The oriole who was a schoolyard bully 'til his wing broke
Those other birds, he'd peck and caw, they'd fly away when he spoke
Caw and call and marking his, that little patch of Earth
You ain't gotta go home, Lord, but you can't dig in my dirt
Anger and resentment, Lord, know it was just plain greed
He took everything he wanted, Lord, much more than he did need
Those bluejays and those robins flew through skinny by the bye
Hold your ear to the window, hear their calls turn into cries
Underneath a lilac bush where lay a tiny patch of mud
You'd hear 'em fighting every day but the others had enough
Compete with this bird, they could not, they'd just admit defeat
Through sycamores and fields and poles to get something to eat
One day a black crow smelled the rot, a pile of uneaten worms
He flew down underneath the bush, Lord, screams are all you heard
The oriole, he limped on out, but could no longer flap his wings
The saddest song you ever heard, but made you happy that he'd sing
The oriole who was a schoolyard bully 'til his wing broke
Now lies dead in the tall grass, no longer does his beak poke
That little patch, contested mud, it's started to dry up
For that oriole is dead and gone, for them that is enough
Yeah, that bully now is dead and gone, for them that is enough
