Sang Like Elvis

(Brian Hendrix)

Far and away, one of the best I ever wrote, and I have no idea where I even came up with the idea. A song jumped into my head during the middle of a power outage in a thunderstorm, and I kept wondering "Where have I heard that song before?" Turns out, I hadn't. It was just playing in my head, so I wrote it. A gift from the thunder, maybe. About a guy telling a story of his uncle who used to be a popular Elvis impersonator for a living. I'm in love with this song. I'm hesitant to list it here. I really like how the first verse drops clues but doesn't flat-out say it, then the chorus is mainly Elvis popular song titles that I tied in together. I happen to think it's clever and catchy, but I'm biased.

My uncle Dave had him a gig, At a bar in 1985 The place was packed with lonely women Lining up to see him live A tight white suit and slicked-back hair Kickin' backstage to warm up He'd open "I'm glad you're here tonight" And end "Thank you very much" (Chorus) He'd sing Blue Moon of Kentucky, Don't Be Cruel Polk Salad Annie, I'm Stuck On You Suspicious Minds, what they're revealing is You've Lost That Loving Feeling Today, Tomorrow and Forever, love is selfless... He looked a little more like Jerry Lee But he sang like Elvis The years they flew on by And they weren't too kind to him Age 62 they called him up Asked "Can you do a show again" A nostalgic touch from way back when The 30th anniversary He limped out proudly on that stage You shoulda heard those ladies scream (Chorus) (Bridge) They called for an encore, Jailhouse Rock And it nearly raised the ceiling After he waved goodnight and walked off the stage They announced he'd left the building (Chorus)

He's Just Like Me

By Brian Hendrix

This would be considered more or less a "power ballad" in the country genre, with the 'He's just like me" part really sang and emphasized. Basically a story about men who have regrets after losing their women and how they should have done better and more to keep them.

Walk-Away Joe

This is more in the old-timey vein of classic country, about a guy who decided one day to start walking. And he's never stopped. He's picked up the nickname "walk-away Joe." Just a fun little song.
