The Embrace

(Christopher Van Name)

Inspired by Hank Willis Thomas’s bronze sculpture, “The Embrace”, which was installed on Boston Commons in Boston, Massachusetts, US last year. It depicts the four arms intertwined, symbolizing the hug that Dr. Martin Luther King and his wife, Coretta Scott King, shared after he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. I tried to imagine the emotions that Dr. King might have been feeling.

Here we are You and me We’ve come so far I can’t believe We climbed the mountaintop I look at you Sometimes I see The way we were And then I need To tell myself to stop We’ll never be that way again We’ll never see those days again That’s no longer who we are But look at all we’ve got I used to dream We’d live a life Content to see Each day and night Unfold before our eyes But that was never Meant to be Something more Would make us see All the promise in those troubled skies And so we had to find the truth And show the world that we were proof That love will win out every time Our love will always see us through And all the times I’ve been mislead When I couldn’t see the light ahead You always knew Somehow you knew The darkness soon would pass And when I stumbled or I fell You were always there to tell me There’s so much more for us to do You always said Our time had come at last How much longer will it last? Let me hold you in my arms Feel me in your heart No matter where you are That’s where I’ll always be Never let this moment go Let it always be a part Of who we are Remember me Always remember me And when the darkness comes again If I’m no longer with you then Promise me you’ll carry on Promise me you’ll carry on And when you look back don’t be sad Always remember what we had I may be gone But we’ll go on Forever, we’ll go on So let me hold you in my arms Feel me in your heart No matter where you are That’s where I’ll always be Never let this moment go Let it always be a part Of who we are Remember me Always remember me Promise me you’ll carry on

Hello, moon

By Christopher Van Name

I had a conversation a few days ago with a homeless person. His name was Tom. He was walking down the road, heading south. I asked him if he ever got lonely for someone to talk to. He said, “I’ve got the moon”. This one’s for Tom.

Unbroken

I continue to be amazed and inspired by the courage and perseverance of the Ukrainian people. Fighting and dying, Street by street, yard by yard, on their homeland for the right to self-determination and the very freedom we take for granted. I shouldn’t be surprised. I married one! For my wife, Adela, and the gallant people of Ukraine and the late Richard D. Hanusey, EdD.

Misunderstood

By Howard Aronson

This lyric is about my struggles with ADHD. It's something I've had since I was diagnosed at 3 years old. I've been on and off medication for it both legally and with cocaine if you want to call that medication, illegally. ADHD is very challenging to live with. It affects your everyday life, you're interpersonal relationships, and your ability to focus, and think before you act. But there's so many good things about being ADHD. Most people with ADHD are very creative and can be very successful, such as Einstein. If you have the ability to hyperfocus on positive things instead of negative things you could turn your ADHD into an asset. For me it's been bittersweet, as I've used my ADHD to be successful, but also to have it play a part in my downfall. I hope you like this lyric.
