I smile with a sweet sadness
At the used cups by the stand
The ordinary everyday items
Last touched by your own hand
Sometimes it seems so silly
But they're all so fresh still in my mind
Everywhere are the precious little things
Of the gap you left behind!
When I browse through all the photographs
I remember everything we had
I see your smiling happy face
And recall the easy, hard, and bad
They all say something special now
As my memory rewinds
They are a lasting record now
Of the gap you left behind
Life's trials and tribulations
All the burdens you never shared
All the taken-for-granted things you did
That showed just how much you cared
Well I'd really like to thank you now
And for a thousand more of which I'm blind
That is the unfillable nature
Of the gap you left behind
And all the happy people
The family and friends that we made one
How we've laughed and cried
How we've joked and sighed
It's them now that keep me strong
And although I love them all dearly
There's no equal I can find
At best, they are a comparison
Of the gap you left behind
And now I'm looking to the future
Of which sadly you're no part
And I think of all the many things
You'll never do or start
That's why I can't stop asking
"Why? It's so unfair!"
But, in time, this world will have a gap
I know I must still bear!
